Composer Information

Born into a musical family, on the famous King Ranch, Kerry Turner studied at Baylor University and the Manhattan School of Music before going to Stuttgart on a Fulbright Fellowship to study horn with Hermann Baumann. His work has been performed and recorded by chamber ensembles from the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and Chicago Symphony, among many others. Turner’s music contains elements of folk music from the British Isles, an inherent Mexican influence combined with his own western-American style, and exotic sounds of North Africa and the Arab world.

Final Considerations

Richochet was commissioned in 1993 by the Freden International Chamber Music Festival in Germany at the request of David Ohanian who, at the time, was hornist with the Canadian Brass. This work is has three distinct sections in one continuous movement. Ricochet belongs to a compositional period in which Turner exploited his Texan heritage. While not strictly programmatic, this is highly energetic and captures the spirit of the people and life in the early days of the western United States. This is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, but requires a mature group to perform it well.

The publisher writes: “Although the trumpet parts are notated for C trumpets, Mr. Turner encourages the use of other trumpets (i.e. Bb, D, Eb or Piccolo) for sections at the discretion of the players.”
